Read my assessment of Amazon’s most recent Fire Television Cube, and you’ll obtain inside it a tale of tragedy.
The 3rd-era Dice is a impressive streaming box entire of neat tricks. You can command it hands-absolutely free with Alexa, plug in a wide vary of USB equipment, and even feed video from a cable or satellite box through its HDMI passthrough ports. The remote management is a phase up as properly, with a helpful “Recent” button for flipping in between apps.
Still all these technological achievements are undermined the Hearth Tv interface, which continues to be a bewildering, chaotic, advert-ridden, self-promotional mess. As other streaming platforms make great strides in usability, Amazon is falling more at the rear of.
So in the fascination of constructive criticism, listed here are a handful of completely unsolicited ways that Amazon can and really should do better:
Slay the to start with banner advert
Jared Newman / Foundry
Banner adverts have been a longstanding annoyance on the Fireplace Tv set household screen, but they turned even even worse after a important redesign final year. Now, the very first advertisement seems in advance of the “Recently Utilized Apps” area, triggering all those applications to slide out of look at when you are on the 1st residence monitor row.
When I realize that adverts assistance subsidize Amazon’s affordable streaming hardware, permitting them obscure essential components of the interface is likely far too far. Amazon really should remove that first ad, demote it further down the house display screen, or appear up with a new technique for ads that doesn’t hinder navigation.
Increase the “Recently Watched” row
Jared Newman / Foundry
Each Apple Television set and Google Television (and shortly Roku) have rows on their house screens for buying up where by you remaining off. When you view a clearly show in a supported app, it’ll look in that row, so you can simply click as a result of and begin observing without the need of remembering which exhibit arrived from in which.
The Fire TV’s have “Recently Watched” row is virtually worthless by comparison, for the reason that it only is effective with demonstrates from Prime Video clip. Amazon desires to get above itself and open up that section to other applications, this sort of as Netflix, HBO Max, and Hulu.
Give customers extra handle above what displays up
Jared Newman / Foundry
I typically refer to the Fireplace TV’s interface as “chaotic” for the reason that you have no say over what seems on it. Recommendations from apps these as Netflix and Tubi appear in no unique buy, and with no means to signal that you’re uninterested in a unique app or assistance.
Google Tv set is primary the way in this article by letting you select which streaming providers can advise content on the home screen. You can even enhance the recommendations by voting on the sorts of exhibits you like. A minor far more manage would go a very long way towards earning the Fireplace Tv encounter greater.
Rethink the 6 pinned applications
Amazon’s glanceable dwelling monitor tiles are a quick-and-dirty take care of for bigger issues.

Related to the observation over, the Hearth Tv set interface does permit you pin 6 favored apps to the leading of the property display for quick accessibility. Some apps even consider this a action even further, exhibiting tips when you highlight them.
But the a lot more I think about it, the much more this appears like a band-aid measure to go over up the Fireplace TV’s better failings. A area of pinned applications is only vital since of the banner advertisement hiding your recent apps, the lack of third-get together information in the “Recently Watched” row, and the lack of ability to customize other parts of the household display screen. The full set up just demands to be reconsidered from scratch.
No additional thriller icons
Back again in June, Amazon changed the “Home,” “Find,” and “Live” buttons at the leading of its home screen with icons, whose function only seems when you highlight them. Web designers refer to this as thriller meat navigation, and although it makes it possible for Amazon to cram more merchandise into the major bar, it also helps make the interface extra baffling. Alongside with the pinned app difficulty previously mentioned, it’s an additional sign that the entire best row requires a rethink.
Display your resources
Jared Newman / Foundry
At a program degree, Amazon has no way of displaying the supply of a movie or display that you’ve highlighted on the household display screen. The only way to see wherever it comes from is to simply click as a result of to its specific listing page, and even then, you sometimes have to click a “More Means to Watch” button to see a entire list of readily available streaming resources.
Amazon really should glance to the TiVo Stream 4K for inspiration, including a simple set of icons to its property display descriptions to signify the source of a movie or exhibit.
A lot less monotonous visuals
The Fireplace TV’s sea of similarly-sized icons isn’t much fun to seem at.
Jared Newman / Foundry
A different rationale the Hearth Television set residence monitor feels frustrating is that just about every row has an identical structure of tiles. Most streaming services have understood that it’s superior to shake items up with taller tiles, greater posters, and circular spotlights. Even Amazon’s personal Key Movie application acquired an update previously this calendar year with additional interesting visuals. The rest of the Fireplace Tv interface should stick to suit.
Even though I’m hardly a master businessman, just one factor I’ve acquired operating a modest newsletter business is that also substantially aggressive self-marketing just drives persons away. It’s a lesson seemingly dropped on Amazon, which by my count dedicates almost a 3rd of its house display to Primary Movie and Freevee articles. Incorporate that with the dwelling screen’s too much advertising and marketing, and there is not considerably room remaining for practical content material.
It’s possible Amazon has telemetry that proves or else, but I’d guess that this relentless self-promotion will make men and women much less most likely to peruse the property monitor in the very first location, and much more likely to shelter inside of individual apps. Amazon demands to assume up a superior program that operates the two for consumers and its base line.
